A goldfish in a self-driving vehicle setting a world record? It sounds like a bizarre stunt, but that’s exactly what happened on the Italian primetime TV show Lo Show dei Record on May 15, 2025. The team behind Pegamento’s “Fish on Wheels<\/strong>” was invited to set a new world record: the longest distance a fish can travel in a self-driving vehicle on land. The result? A remarkable achievement of 12 meters and 28 inches in one minute.<\/p>\n\n

From idea to world record<\/strong>The adventure began when the Italian producers contacted Serge Poppes, CEO of Pegamento. They asked if his team still had the unique Fish on Wheels invention and if they could set a world record. The challenge was accepted and soon the preparation phase began. To measure the distance correctly, at the request of the producers, the creators initially experimented with a modified measuring wheel and a marker pen. But upon arrival at the Italian TV studio, this method was rejected for the record attempt. In haste, a new measurement method was developed: counting the rotations of the wheels using stickers on the wheels and a conversion formula. <\/p>\n\n

Recordings under high voltage<\/strong>The actual filming took place in a tightly directed TV studio in Milan, where six world records a day were recorded in both an Italian and Spanish version of the show. This meant there was hardly any room for error. The team had three chances to successfully set the record. Despite challenges, including a broken aquarium due to air travel and coming up with a valid measurement method that was acceptable to the judges for the record attempt, Pegamento managed to set the record within the allotted time. The fish, appropriately named “Blub,” and spiritual father Thomas de Wolf<\/a> convinced the Guinness World Records<\/a> jury and received the official certificate. With this, Pegamento is now officially a company with a Guinness World Record. The record was already set on January 23, 2025, but had to remain secret until the time of broadcast. <\/p>\n\n

A unique experience<\/strong>Although the stay in Italy was far from luxurious, with a simple hotel on the edge of the highway and mediocre food in the TV studio, the team looks back on a special experience.“It was a mega production in which every minute counted. But to witness how such a great show is made and to set a record there myself was really fantastic,” Thomas said.What happened to the Italian ‘Blub’ after the show? It was neatly returned to the pet store, perhaps as the first fish ever with a Guinness World Record to its name. <\/p>\n\n

About Lo Show dei Record<\/strong>Lo Show dei Record is broadcast in Italy by Canale 5 and presented by Gerry Scotti, who is hosting this popular Guinness World Records program for the sixth time. The program, produced by RTI in cooperation with Banijay Italia, attracts weekly viewers of all ages who witness extraordinary feats and remarkable records. Performances are validated by official Guinness World Records judges Lorenzo Veltri, Simone Barlaam and Sofia Greenacre, who ensure that each record is performed and recorded correctly. <\/p>\n\n

The start of Fish on Wheels<\/strong>Fish on Wheels began in 2014 as an innovative project with the goal of demonstrating that computer vision technology extends far beyond traditional applications in automation or data collection. Pegamento wanted to demonstrate that this technology can also be used to create simple interactions that allow even animals to influence their environment. That principle is made tangible with Fish on Wheels, in which a fish can control its own aquarium, if it is smart enough to understand it. <\/p>\n\n

The Fish on Wheels prototype was built using a standard webcam, a battery-powered Beagleboard-XM and an Arduino-controlled robotic vehicle. Contrast detection between the fish and the bottom of the aquarium was used to determine the position of the fish. This position data was then translated into commands for the Arduino, causing the vehicle to move in the direction of the fish. The more recent variant, however, simply uses a smartphone with image recognition software<\/a> to control the robotic cart.
